Fritz Huxel (born September 27, 1892 in Westhofen ; † January 20, 1972 ibid) was a German winery owner and vine pioneer in Rheinhessen .

Life

Born as the son of the Rheinhessen wine merchant Friedrich Huxel and his wife Anna Maria Eckelmann from Alsheim , he worked as a winemaker in his hometown until 1962. In 1920 he married Anna Maria Orb, with whom he had 2 children. His family comes from the Huguenot branch of a Burgundian count dynasty, which in the 17th century provided high-ranking commanders and ministers of the royal government.

In the early years of the twentieth century, Huxel recognized how helpful the mechanization of viticulture could be, which is still attributed to him as visionary today. Huxel worked closely with the State Institute for Vine Breeding in Alzey . The vine with the breeding number S 3962, crossed in 1927 by Georg Scheu from Gutedel and Muscat précoce de Saumur , was the first to allow larger space in his grape variety list. In the 1950s he recognized their importance for quality viticulture. Fritz Huxel achieved high and highest awards at national and international awards with wines from this breed. In doing so, he made a significant contribution to the success of the cultivation of this grape variety , which was later named after him. In 1969 this breeding line received plant variety protection.

When in 1949 the automobile manufacturer Opel held a competition to find out who would drive the oldest still registered Opel passenger car in the Trizone or in West Berlin, Fritz Huxel became known throughout Germany through an article in Der Spiegel . His "Alter Fritz", an Opel 5/12 PS built in 1912 won the competition.

Huxel died on January 20, 1972 and was buried in the cemetery in his hometown.
