Fritz Menzel

Fritz Menzel (born April 13, 1867 in Helmstedt ; † July 6, 1935 in Braunschweig ) was a German forester and ornithologist .

Life

Fritz Menzel was born in Helmstedt in 1867. He studied forest science at the Höhere Forstlehranstalt in Eberswalde and then worked in the Brunswick forest service. He worked in the Vorwohle forestry offices in the districts of Holzminden , Helmstedt / Lappwald , Bad Harzburg (1898 to 1908), Calvörde / Drömling (1912 to 1932) and Braunschweig. With the support of the brothers Rudolf and Wilhelm Blasius and the ornithologist Adolph Nehrkorn , Menzel set up a systematic collection of birds' eggs. The oological collection was sold to the Koenig Museum in Bonn in 1927 or 1928 .

Menzel last lived in Braunschweig at Löwenwall 2. He died in July 1935 at the age of 68 in Braunschweig.

From 1888 Menzel published articles in ornithological journals, including avifaunistic articles about his local landscape. He published data on the population of birds of prey and crows as well as evidence of the greater spotted eagle near Bad Harzburg. Menzel dealt intensively with the previously unknown breeding biology of the pine jay in the Harz Mountains and published his observations in 1909 as part of a comprehensive pine jam monograph edited by Otto Kleinschmidt .
