Fritz Winkler (painter)

Fritz Winkler (born August 7, 1894 in Dresden ; † March 20, 1964 there ) was a German painter . He belonged to the "second generation of Expressionists " around 1920 and was a member of the Dresden artist group Die Schaffenden , the German Association of Artists , a member of the board of the Saxon Art Association and part of the group of the Seven Walkers .

Life

Fritz Winkler was born in 1894 as the son of a lithographer . From 1909 to 1912 he attended the Dresden School of Applied Arts . From 1912 to 1915 he studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Emanuel Hegenbarth . Fritz Winkler was called up as a soldier in 1915 during the First World War . He was badly wounded in the war and lost his left eye. From 1918 to 1921 he studied as a master student with Emanuel Hegenbarth.

1921 Winkler created until 1928 as a freelance illustrations for those of Erich Knauf issued Volkszeitung for Plauen and the Vogtland . Winkler traveled through Germany. In 1927, together with Erich Fraaß , Georg Nerlich and Erich Ohser , he illustrated the book Earth Under Feet , published in 1929 . A new trip to Germany by Max Barthel of the Gutenberg Book Guild . From 1928 Winkler worked regularly for the Gutenberg Book Guild and its monthly magazine. In 1929 he designed and illustrated the German edition of the book Abenteuer im Eismeer by the Swedish author Albert Viksten .

Around 1920 Winkler was a member of the Dresden artist group Die Schaffenden around Erich Fraaß , Curt Großpietsch , Wilhelm Lachnit , Willy Illmer and Fritz Skade . Winkler was a member of the German Association of Artists . From 1927 to 1929 he was a board member of the Saxon Art Association . After the seizure of power of the Nazis in 1933 Fritz Winkler was undesirable as an artist. He became part of the artist group of seven walkers around Johannes Beutner , Erich Fraaß, Otto Griebel , Josef Hegenbarth , Hans Jüchser , Karl Kröner , Wilhelm Lachnit, Theodor Rosenhauer and Paul Wilhelm .

In 1943, Winkler was called up as a soldier in the Second World War . During the air raids on Dresden in February 1945, almost all of Fritz Winkler's previous work was lost. In 1946 Fritz Winkler returned to Dresden from an English captivity. In the remaining 18 years up to his death in 1964 Fritz Winkler created over three hundred paintings and five thousand watercolors, which he bequeathed to the Dresden State Art Collections in his will . The Freital Municipal Collections at Burgk Castle also have numerous works by Fritz Winkler.
