Frogs (on video / DVD also Frogs - Killer aus dem Swamp , on TV also Frogs ) is an American horror film from 1972.

A family celebration on a small island becomes a horror for guests and staff. Not only frogs , but also insects , birds and reptiles take merciless revenge for the destruction of their habitat.

action

The family patriarch Jason Crocket, who has been bound to a wheelchair for 15 years, invites his family to his country estate on a small island off the coast of Florida on July 4th, just like all the years before . Not only should independence day be traditionally celebrated, but also the host's birthday. For the family members, however, these days seem to be more of a chore, and the guests also feel disturbed by the excessive croaking of the frogs this year.

In addition to family members and service staff, press photographer Picket Smith also becomes an unwilling guest of society. This cinematic starting point is conveyed to the viewer in the introduction to the film. On a canoe, Picket Smith photographs the pollution of the lake when he is approached in his canoe by a speedboat controlled by the slightly drunk family member Clint Crocket. As an apology, Smith is invited to a drink and later to spend the night on the island.

The celebration on the following day is pure horror for those present. One after the other falls victim to animal revenge, and the first dead are soon found. The fight between humans and the animal world is staged quite impressively. The croaking of the frogs initially only constitutes the acoustic background of the animal attacks; it is rather spiders ( tarantulas ), snakes, birds and crocodiles that attack.

Although a regular family celebration is soon no longer possible and those who remain have to flee into the house, the family patriarch refuses to leave the island and also forbids the remaining family members to break off the family tradition. Smith's admonishing words are of no use either, who on the one hand condemns the destruction of the animal habitat, mainly with chemicals, and on the other hand regards this as the origin of the "revenge of nature" now taking place.

In the end, Picket Smith tries to leave the island by canoe with a daughter of the family patriarch (Karen Crockett) and two children (whose parents have already been victims of the animal kingdom), which he succeeds after a fight between Picket Smith and attacking water snakes.

Jason Crocket is the only one left with his dog on the property. As night falls, hundreds of frogs jump into his house, where Crocket dies of a heart attack. The film ends with all the lights in the house going out.

Publications

The film opened in German cinemas on March 15, 1973 under the simple title Frogs (distributor: CS), but in a heavily shortened version with a length of approx. 78 minutes.

On March 21, 1981, the film under the title Frogs in Germany ran for the first time in its uncut form (and a new German dubbed version) on the TV program of ARD (30% participation).

In 1985, the shortened theatrical version from VCL to VHS was released again - now under the title Frogs - Killer from the Swamp . It was not until MGM was released on DVD on October 11, 2005, that the film was released again in Germany, although the unabridged TV synchronization was not used, but the parts that were not included in the German theatrical version and therefore not synchronized were left in the original sound and subtitled in German.

On October 4, 2013, Tele 5 showed the film in the series The worst films of all time .

Reviews

"Macabre horror film, whose critical intentions are drowned in disgusting scenes."
