history

Frontier Airlines Boeing 737-291, 1985

Frontier Airlines was founded on November 27, 1946 as Monarch Air Lines . It served cities in the "Four Corners" states of Colorado , Utah , New Mexico and Arizona . In 1950 it was renamed Frontier Airlines. She flew to cities in the Rocky Mountains , including Denver , Salt Lake City, and Billings . In the year it was founded, the airline flew to 40 cities in the Rocky Mountains with twelve Douglas DC-3s .

In 1959, Frontier Airlines received the first Convair CV-340 . At the same time, she also introduced a new logo. In 1966, the company bought the Boeing 727-100 , which began the jet age for Frontier Airlines. In 1967, Frontier Airlines took over Central Airlines and took over 11 Convair CV-600s and 16 DC-3s. In February 1968 she integrated the stretched Boeing 727-200 into her fleet. Between 1969 and 1970 all Convair 600 were phased out. The company had already stopped operating its DC-3 a year earlier. In 1971 the first Boeing 737-200 was delivered, which replaced the Boeing 727.

In 1977, Frontier Airlines flew to both Burbank and Orange County Airport from Denver under an onward flight agreement with Hughes Airwest . She also flew to Sacramento , which was the airline's first California destination. In 1979 Frontier Airlines flew to 94 cities in the US, Canada and Mexico.

On May 31, 1982, Frontier Airlines phased out its last Convair CV-580 . Frontier Airlines served 170 airports during its existence. On October 5, 1985, the end of Frontier Airlines finally came: On October 5, 1985, People Express took over Frontier Airlines, which ceased operations on August 24, 1986 due to losses and went bankrupt four days later.

On October 24, 1986, Continental Airlines took over People Express. People Express and thus Frontier Airlines merged with Continental Airlines on February 1, 1987, together with New York Air and several smaller airlines.

On February 8, 1994, eight years after Frontier Airlines ceased operations, today's Frontier Airlines of the same name was created and began operations on July 5, 1994.
