Fuat Saner (born October 31, 1945 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player . Due to his many years of service for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , his name is closely associated with this club. He was part of that Fenerbahçe-team in the 1967/68 season by winning the Turkish Cup and the Turkish Cup for the first time in club history the Turkish double could get. In the 1973/74 season he was also part of the squad that won the club's second double victory.

Player career

society

Saner began club football in 1963 in the youth department of the Istanbul club Çapa SK. In 1964 he moved to the Istanbul first division club Feriköy SK . At this club, where his father Siyamettin Saner was on the board, he quickly won a regular place and subsequently played for the Turkish U-18 and U-21 national teams .

After he was able to assert himself consistently as a regular player for two seasons, several clubs tried to sign him in the summer of 1966. Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Galatasaray Istanbul in particular tried to get a commitment. Both clubs tried to take advantage of the fact that Saner was still playing under an amateur player license and was therefore obliged to pay at favorable terms according to the regulation in force at the time. Galatasaray even invited Saner to his pre-season preparation camp and thus drew the displeasure of the Feriköy club officials. The commitment efforts of both clubs remained unsuccessful in this transfer season. It was only in the 167 summer transfer season that Fenerbahçe reached an agreement with Feriköy. So Saner moved to Fenerbahçe for a fee of 15,000 Turkish Lira . At his new club, Saner quickly gained a regular place. Here he was able to win the Turkish championship and also the Turkish Cup in his first season, the 1967/68 season , with his team under the leadership of the Hungarian coach Ignác Molnár . As a result, Saner was part of the Fenerbahçes squad that won the first double in club history. In addition, the Balkan Cup for the 1966/67 season was won in October 1967 . Despite this successful debut at Fenerbahçe, Saner, who had sat on the substitute bench in some preparation games, expressed his displeasure in the summer of 1968 and asked for his sale. The second season under Molnár, his club remained below expectations both in the league and in the cup. This season, Saner lost his regular place in phases and ended the season with 21 competitive appearances. After this disappointing season, the Molnár club replaced the Romanian coach Traian Ionescu . Under this coach, Saner's team returned to the road to success, ended the 1969/70 season as Turkish champions and also won the TSYD Istanbul Cup, which was played pre-seasonally . However, Saner lost further importance in the team planning this season and ended the season with 12 competitive appearances. Despite the successful season with Ionescu, the club management replaced him with his compatriot Constantin Teaşcă . Under this new coach, Saner asserted himself again as a regular player and increased his competitive stakes to 43 games. His club failed to defend their title in the Turkish championship and finished the league as runner-up behind arch-rivals Galatasaray.

Also in the season 1971/72 Saner kept his regular place. He ended the season with 35 competitive appearances, but remained without a title with his club. In the 1972/73 season, Saner further consolidated his position within the team and also played regularly for the Turkish national team. With his team he was able to win the President's Cup , the Prime Minister's Cup and the Turkish Vice Championship this season . Towards the end of the 1972/73 season, however, Saner came under increasing criticism, so he was whistled in some games by his own viewers. At the end of the season, Fenerbahçe put him on the sales list. After these developments, Saner pointed out that he had a contract with his club until the summer of 1975 and wanted to fulfill it. However, since he had not found approval from the club's management, Vefa Istanbul tried in the summer of 1973 to sign Saner. Before the 1973/74 season, Saner was suspended from the team with his teammates Muharrem Algıç , Necati Göçmen and Yavuz Şimşek and had to take part in the training of the reserve team at times . After a sale of Saners had not come about, he was accepted into the team squad in mid-November 1973 after five months of abstinence and again involved in training. A week later he was used in the league game against Mersin İdman Yurdu over the full game. After this game, he was out the rest of the season due to injury. With his club he finished this season as a Turkish champion and cup winner. As a result, he also became part of the team that was able to bring the double victory in club history for the second time. In addition, he and his club won the TSYD Istanbul Cup, which was held pre-seasonally. After this season he left his club and ended his career.

National team

Saner's national team career began in February 1964 with a commitment for the Turkish U-18 national team.

In the years 1965 to 1969 he played four times for the Turkish U-21 national team in the Balkan Cup . On some of these missions, Saner was well over 21 years old.

In 1972 he was nominated for the first time and for the squad of the Turkish national team in a qualifying game of the 1974 World Cup against the Luxembourg national team by national coach Coşkun Özarı and completed his only senior international match in this game.

In total, he completed one U-18, seven U-21 and three A internationals.
