Funeral Potatoes (German funeral potatoes ), sometimes referred to as Heavenly Potatoes (German Celestial potatoes referred), a potato dish from the regional cuisine are Mountain States in the United States . It is particularly popular in Utah and neighboring areas of neighboring states such as Idaho among the local Mormons as part of their customs and is also one of the most famous dishes of Mormon culture from the outside world.

The origin of the court and its name are not known. It probably dates back to its use as a supplement to funeral services hosted by Relief Society , a nonprofit organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . It is also becoming increasingly widespread at other Mormon festivals such as baptisms or weddings as well as on traditional holidays such as Christmas , Easter , Thanksgiving or Pioneer Day .

Funeral Potatoes is a casserole whose main ingredient is potatoes , cut into cubes or used as hash browns . Other ingredients include cheese , for which Cheddar or Parmesan is mostly used, onions , a cream soup of variable composition or a creamy sauce , sour cream and a top layer of melted butter and cornflakes , crushed potato chips or breadcrumbs . Depending on the recipe and regional variations, other ingredients such as peas , beans , garlic , green chili peppers , broccoli or ham can be cut into small pieces.

A cooking competition called Utah's Own Funeral Potato Contest takes place as part of the annual Utah State Fair . During the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City a numbered pin with a representation of that court to souvenirs .
