Coordinates: 60 ° 41 ′  N , 17 ° 9 ′  O Gävle is a municipality ( Swedish commun ) in the Swedish province of Gävleborgs län and the historical province of Gästrikland . The main town of the municipality is Gävle .

Other localities are Åbyggeby , Bergby , Björke , Forsbacka , Furuvik , Hamrångefjärden , Hedesunda , Norrsundet , Totra , Trödje , Valbo and other smaller villages. The European roads E4 and E16 as well as the national roads 56 and 76 and four railway lines, which come together in the town of Gävle, run through the municipality .

geography

The municipality extends as a 30 km wide coastal strip about 90 km along the Baltic Sea and further south into the inland. In front of the coast are archipelago .

The town of Gävle is located in the center of the municipality at the mouth of the rivers Gävleån and Testeboån in the Baltic Sea. 10 kilometers south of Gävle lies Furuvik on the coast, which is known for its animal and amusement park Furuviksparken , which was founded in 1900 . About 20 kilometers west of Gävle on the E16 is the industrial town of Forsbacka, which was founded in the 16th century. The ironworks from the 18th century is now an industrial monument.

Hamrånge Church

About 40 kilometers north of Gävle is Hamrångefjärden with the villages of Hamrångefjärden, Totra and Norrsundet. The nearby ironworks in Vifors was founded in 1694. Today's buildings with a rococo manor, the hammer mill and other buildings date from the 18th century.

About 50 kilometers south of Gävle, the Dalälven valley crosses the municipal area, which there expands into a series of lakes. From Hedesunda, which lies at the northern tip of Hedesundafjärden, the Ön headland extends south into the Dalälven.

The municipality of Gävle is a service and industrial municipality. Gävle is not only the capital of the municipality, but also the seat of the provincial administration and several Swedish central offices. In the industrial sector, the capital goods industry and the wood processing industry dominate, but the food industry ( General Foods and Ahlgrens ) also plays a certain role.
