Görlitz Old Town Festival
The Görlitzer Altstadtfest is an annual city festival in the old town of Görlitz . The old town festival was initiated in Görlitz as an annual town festival after the second day of the Saxons in 1993, took place for the first time in August 1994 and is held every year on a weekend in late August or early September.
The organizer of the city festival is Kulturservice GmbH - a city society that organizes the operation and marketing of city cultural institutions and events.
Event site
The festival spreads over almost the entire old town area. Beginning at Marienplatz , the festival area stretches across Obermarkt and Brüderstrasse to Untermarkt . At the Untermarkt, the festival area divides to the east over Neißstraße down to the old town bridge on the Lausitzer Neisse and to the north over Peterstraße to St. Peter and Paul . The southern forecourt of the parish church on Waidhaus and the northern forecourt of the church on Vogtshof are also part of the area. Resident initiatives organize events on Kränzel- and Nikolaistraße on the festival weekend. The Jakuby Festival , named after the mystic Jakob Böhme , takes place in Zgorzelec on the same weekend . The Polish festival area runs along the banks of the Neisse on Ulica Wrocławska and Ulica Daszyńskiego and merges with the festival of the sister city of Görlitz on the old town bridge.
Booths
The stand areas are divided into four zones. Zone A is located around the main stage on Obermarkt. Zone B adjoins Zone A to the east as far as Brüderstraße and also includes the area in front of the Vierradenmühle . Zone C extends over the fairgrounds at Marienplatz and the entire historical festival area around the Untermarkt. The street festivals organized by citizens' initiatives on Nikolaistraße, Kränzelstraße and on the fish market belong to Zone D. On the historical festival area, which extends from Untermarkt via Peterstraße to Rosenstraße and Nikolaistraße as well as to Waidhaus and Vogtshof, only stalls with historical decorated covers or historically designed wagons can be set up. In addition to the many different drinks and food stalls, there are also jewelry stands and dealers for handicrafts. The rides are located on Marienplatz and Obermarkt.
Financial support
The city festival is supported annually by numerous sponsors, including Bombardier with its wagon building in Görlitz , the Landskron brewery from Görlitz, the Sparkasse Oberlausitz-Lower Silesia and many medium-sized companies from the region. Citizens and visitors to the festival can also contribute directly to the costs of the festival by purchasing a badge - the so-called Altstadtfestpin - or by purchasing an old town festival share worth 100 euros. The cost of the festival in 2010 amounted to 231,000 euros. Since 2009, the pin has been adorned with a different, well-known Görlitz building every year. In 2014, in addition to the normal pin, there was also the golden pin on the occasion of the festival's 20th anniversary, for which the festival was supported with a higher amount. In the two following years, the Golden Pin was offered again with the current structure. The following table shows the badges since 2003.

The badges can either be purchased in advance or as a so-called voluntary road toll during the festival weekend. Historically dressed citizens drive the toll at the entrances to the historic festival area from the approximately 100,000 annual visitors on the festival weekend. B. on the Brüderstraße, on the stairs to St. Peter and Paul as well as on the Weberstraße.
The stall fees levied by the city and the city's own beer stands also help to repay the costs of the festival. However, the city has to subsidize the festival every year. In 2010 the festival made a loss of 37,000 euros, with the loss due to the sale of beverages at the city's own stalls being reduced by a further 33,000 euros.
After many of the last old town festivals, due to the low income from pin sales, there were discussions in the press about charging general admission to the historic festival area around the Lower Market. However, this is not legally possible because the squares and streets belong to the publicly inhabited area.
