Gösta Thomas (born January 18, 1949 in Heidenheim ) is a former German politician of the right-wing extremist NPD . From 1977 to 1980 he was the national chairman of their youth association Young National Democrats .

Professional background

After attending elementary school in Hamburg and Giengen , Thomas graduated from high school in 1967 and was doing military service in the German Navy until the end of the following year . His activity on the frigate Karlsruhe was that of a radar operator . In 1969 he began studying history and political science in Erlangen , where he wrote his dissertation .

Political career

Thomas joined the still young NPD in 1967 and took part in the establishment of the party's own youth association JN. As early as 1972 it was elected chairman of the JN district association for Middle Franconia . At that time, the association was the strongest sub-organization in the whole of Germany. At the same time he was a member of the JN national management and in charge of the Department Political Education . The political training of the members was thus in his area of responsibility. In 1973 he became deputy chairman of the NPD district association in Middle Franconia.

From 1977 to 1980 he headed the Young National Democrats as federal chairman. During this time there was a test of strength between the right-wing extremist Günter Deckert and the national conservative Martin Mußgnug for the chairmanship of the NPD. In 1979 the former JN chairman Deckert lost 103 to 164 votes. The unsettled attitude of the JN and the neutral stance of its chairman Thomas in this conflict contributed to the defeat.
