history

Gümmenen (historical name around 1259 Contamina ) had a special position with its bridge over the Saane since the 13th century. A first bridge was built around 1450. Since Gümmenen was a border town between the Bernese and Friborg areas, there was a customs and guard house at the Saane crossing.

The Gümmenenkrieg between Bern and Freiburg took place here from 1331–33 . Tensions between the two cities increased after Bern had acquired Laupen in 1310 and Freiburg in 1317 Gümmenen and their rule was transferred to the other side of the Saane, respectively. the scythe expanded. Bern, allied with Solothurn, destroyed the castle and town including the farming village of Mauss in 1331. Peace was concluded in 1333, mediated by Queen Agnes of Hungary . Gümmenen stayed with Freiburg; Bern was given free hand in the upper Aare valley.

Secured trade routes through Gümmenen have been documented since the 13th century. The first bridge from the middle of the 15th century was followed by the still existing wooden bridge from 1739, and the concrete bridge was built in 1959.

On July 1, 1901, the Bern-Neuchâtel railway opened its route via Gümmenen. Until 1993 Gümmenen was still connected to Laupen and Flamatt by the Sensetalbahn . Today, in addition to the BLS rail connection, there is a bus connection between the Freiburg Transport Authority and Murten . The Gümmenen train station is in the Kleingümmenen district, which, interestingly, is in the municipality of Ferenbalm, on the left bank of the Saane. The TGV line Paris - Bern also ran via Gümmenen, or Kleingümmenen, until 2013.

The railway line crosses the Saane Valley and the Saane River south of Gümmenen on a 500 m long, curved dam and the adjoining viaduct . The viaduct adjoining the dam has 22 masonry arches to the west, the Saane is crossed with a 65 m long truss bridge, and another 5 masonry arches connect to the east. The viaduct is a total of 400 m long. Since 2018, the dam and the bridge structures have been widened in connection with the two-lane expansion of the Bern-Neuchâtel railway line (see also the new Rosshäuser tunnel ). The truss bridge will be replaced by a wider, two-track carriageway, while the viaduct is being renovated and will also have a double-wide track trough. Completion is expected in 2021.
