Günter Conrad Althans (born November 30, 1934 in Halle ) is a German elementary, secondary school, secondary school teacher ( senior teacher ) and deaf-blind teacher. He studied in Oldenburg , Bremen and Hamburg . Althans last worked from 1974 to 2000 at the education center for the deaf-blind in Hanover .

Life

Günter Conrad Althans is the fifth of six children (five sisters) of the businessman Konrad Ewald Althans (1901–1949) and Elli (née Fetter; 1904–1990). From 1941 to 1949 he attended elementary school and high school in Halle (Saale) . In July 1949 he finished the "German Unified School " after the school reform in the Soviet occupation zone . From September 1949 to July 1952 he was an apprentice in the Halle / Saale consumer cooperative with the aim of training as a commercial worker (shop window designer and poster painter). From September 1952 he joined the recently founded organization “ Service for Germany ” as a volunteer . Places of work were Prora (island of Rügen) and Stalinstadt (today: Eisenhüttenstadt ). On June 6, 1953, he fled the GDR via Berlin . Until 1958 he worked as chief decorator in Bremen, Füssen (general) and Hanover. From 1958 to 1959 Althans worked as a volunteer educator at the Stephansstift in Hanover. After passing the entrance exam, he completed an apprenticeship as a craftsman at the Oldenburg University of Education from 1960 to 1961 . From 1961 to 1962 Althans volunteered in Lebanon as a teacher and educator at the Syrian Orphanage in Jerusalem . In 1962 Althans passed the special examination for talented students in Bremen and was admitted to study for teaching at primary, secondary and secondary schools. He passed the 1st state examination in 1966 and was then named “apl. Official "assigned to a combined elementary and secondary school. In 1967 he switched to the special school for visually impaired children in Bremen at his own request. After passing the 2nd state examination in 1970, Althans was admitted to the University of Hamburg as a civil servant for life and for postgraduate studies . In 1972 he finished his studies as a teacher for the blind and visually impaired and then studied for three more semesters in addition to his teaching position for the deaf , hard of hearing and speech therapy . In 1974 he moved from Bremen to Lower Saxony to the newly founded “ German Deafblindenwerk ”, where he worked until he retired in 2000. In 1975 he became a teacher appointed in 1976 to a senior teacher. He continued to exercise his honorary posts intensively after his retirement. Althans has been married to Ingrid Althans, a graduate social worker, since 1969. Bela Ewald Althans is his son.

  • 1981–2011: Managing Director of the Working Group on Youth Literature for the Blind
  • 1983–2006: Advisory member of the federal executive committee of the AG Early Intervention for Blind and Visually Impaired Children in the VBS.

Althans has been an elected member of the Christoffel-Blindenmission (CBM) since 1996 and from 1998 to 2006 took part in voluntary work abroad in Europe, Asia and Africa as a mission council of the CBM.
