Günter Dietz

Günter Dietz (born April 13, 1930 in Karlsruhe ; † May 13, 2017 in Heidelberg ) was a German classical philologist , poet and translator from modern Greek .

Life

Günter Dietz studied classical philology , German literature and philosophy at the University of Freiburg from 1949 to 1954 . He was followed by a dissertation to Sallust ascribed letters to Caesar at Karl Buchner doctorate . From 1958 to 1964 he taught at the German School in Athens . There he met the Greek poet and Nobel laureate Odysseas Elytis and translated his main work To Axion Esti ( Το Άξιον Εστί ) into German. After his return to Germany he taught at the Bismarck-Gymnasium in his native Karlsruhe. From 1972 to 1993 he was headmaster at the Kurfürst-Friedrich-Gymnasium in Heidelberg .

In addition to translations of modern Greek poets, Dietz has also published his own poetry since 1953 . His first poems appeared in the anthology of religious poetry Das dunkle Du . There were also numerous lectures and essays on classical philology .

Honors

In December 2005 Dietz was awarded the German-Greek Translation Prize, donated by the Goethe Institute Athens and the National Book Center in cooperation with the Literaturhaus München .
