Günther Schmidt (soccer player)

Günther Schmidt (born May 6, 1924 in Neumünster ; † November 16, 2013 ) was a German football player .

Player career

Schmidt started playing football at the age of eleven at the Gut-Heil Neumünster sports club and - having outgrown his youth - switched to FC Union Neumünster in 1945 , for which he played in the Schleswig-Holstein regional league from 1947 to 1950 .

Arrived in North Rhine-Westphalia , he played from 1950 to 1957 for Alemannia Aachen in the Oberliga West , in one of five seasons as the highest German division, 146 point games in which he scored 49 goals. He and his team would almost have been relegated to the 2nd Oberliga West if his team hadn't won the decider for 14th place against Borussia M.gladbach 5-0 and the subsequent relegation to Oberliga West hadn't been successfully completed. So he stayed until the end of his career in the league, in which the best placement was achieved with 3rd place in the seasons 1951/52 and 1955/56 .

During his club membership he played all six games in the DFB Cup competition in 1952/53 , in which he made his debut on August 17, 1952 in Herzogenrath in a 5-2 first-round victory over TuS Essen-West and scored two goals. After he played the round of 16 against 1. FC Nürnberg on October 5, 1952 with 3: 3 and his team had won the replay on November 9 with 2: 0 thanks to his two goals, he pulled her over the am March 1, 1953 with 3-1 against Hamborn 07 won the quarter-finals and the semi-finals won 3-1 against Wormatia Worms on March 8th . This was lost on May 1, 1953 in the Düsseldorf Rheinstadion against Rot-Weiss Essen, however, 1: 2; the connecting goal by Jupp Derwall in the 56th minute was the only goal his team managed.

Coaching career

In 1957 he coached the Eschweiler SG , then the VfR Übach-Palenberg and finally the SC Kellersberg, located in the Alsdorf district .
