Günther Thömmes

Günther Thömmes (* 1963 in Neuerburg , Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm , Rhineland-Palatinate ) is a German master brewer and author.

Life

Thömmes grew up in Bitburg and completed an apprenticeship as a brewer and maltster at the Th. Simon brewery in Bitburg . He then went to the Technical University of Munich - Weihenstephan campus to there Brewing study. During his studies he worked as a brewer's journeyman for master brewer Doris Engelhard in the Mallersdorf monastery brewery (1988) and the Guinness / Park Royal Brewery in London, UK (1989). He completed his studies in 1991 as a master brewer .

From 1991 to 2012 Thömmes worked in the brewery supply industry with worldwide operations. From January to May 2017, Thömmes took over the position of master brewer at the brewery at the Weyermann malt house in Bamberg . Since the beginning of 2018 he has been working again as a sales engineer in plant construction. He lives in Brunn am Gebirge in Lower Austria and writes not only books and short thrillers but also for the specialist journal Brauwelt , there mostly on topics related to beer history. He also occasionally writes for beer blogs such as Gradplato.com or Hopfenhelden.de.

In April 2018, he won 100,000 euros on the TV show Der Quiz-Champion .

Beer magic

From spring 2010, Thömmes ran a small brewery in Brunn am Gebirge ( Lower Austria ) - the “beer magic” - and tried to brew forgotten types of beer again. At the end of 2013, brewing in Brunn was stopped. Thömmes continued his brewing activity as a "traveling brewer" until the beginning of 2016 and rented various craft breweries in order to be able to continue to produce and market the beers of the Bier Zaubererei brand . The “Hop Artists” project in Mödling , which began in early 2016 and in which Thömmes worked as a consultant and then as an employed master brewer, was discontinued in September due to the operator's financial difficulties. In spring 2011, the Conrad Seidl beer guide named “ Bier Zaubererei ” as “Micro-Brewery of the Year” in Austria. In 2012 the “Spekulatius Ale” also received a certificate from the “Beer Guide” as “Beer of the Year in Austria”. The 'Beer Magic' project has now been discontinued.
