Radu Gabrea
Radu Bartholomeu Gabrea (born June 20, 1937 in Bucharest , Romania ; † February 9, 2017 ) was a Romanian film director , screenwriter and producer .
Life
Radu Gabrea graduated from the Bucharest Theater and Film School ( Institutul de Artă Teatrală și Cinematografică “IL Caragiale” ) in 1968 . With his first two feature films Too Small for such a Great War and Beyond the Sands , both of which were shown at the Cannes Festival , Gabrea, like director Lucian Pintilie, was an important representative of the new dawn in Romanian film after 1968. As his second Film Beyond the Sands was banned in Romania, he went into exile. From 1974 to 1997 he lived and worked in the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1986 he received his doctorate at the Université catholique de Louvain in Belgium, with a dissertation on "Werner Herzog and the Rhenish Mysticism" (French book edition under the title Werner Herzog et la mystique rhénane published by L'âge d'homme , Lausanne , 1986).
From 1998 Gabrea worked again in Bucharest, first as President of the National Film Office in the Romanian Ministry of Culture, then as producer, director and author. Gabrea also taught at the University of Theater and Film in Bucharest.
In 2011 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon .
He was married to the actress Victoria Cociaș .
