Gabriel Freiherr von Rodich ( Croatian Gabrijel barun Rodić ; born December 13, 1812 in Vrginmost , Croatia , † May 21, 1890 in Vienna ) was a Croatian nobleman of Serbian descent and general in the Austro-Hungarian army .

Life

He first attracted attention in 1835 as a border officer in a skirmish against insurgent Begs under Hussein Berbirli Aga in Bosnia, fought against the Hungarians under Jellachich ( Croatian Jelačić ) from 1848-49 and became colonel in 1851 , in 1859 for his defense of the Bay of Kotor ( Croatian Boka kotorska ; Italian Bocche di Cattaro ) against the French and Italian fleets Freiherr. In the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866, as commander of the 5th Army Corps, he contributed significantly to the victory of Custozza .

After he had appeased the uprising in the Bay of Kotor in 1869 through the Peace of Knezlac, albeit only after paying a sum of money to the rebels, he was appointed governor of the Crown Land of Dalmatia in 1870 and was eager to push the Italians back more and more and bring the Croatians to rule. He was therefore very popular with them and was called "old Gabriel" ( stari Gavro ). Dismissed in 1881 , retired as Feldzeugmeister and appointed a member of the manor house , he retired to Vienna, where he died in 1890. Gabriel von Rodich found his final resting place in the Vienna Central Cemetery (31B / 12/4).
