Gabriele Evertz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gabriele Evertz (* 1945 in Berlin ) is an American painter , curator and professor who deals with color research. She is a representative of geometric abstraction .

Life

Gabriele Evertz emigrated to the USA at the age of 19. There she studied art history ( B.A. ) with the title Magna cum laude at Hunter College in New York . She then completed a degree in painting at the same college, which she graduated in 1990 as a Master of Fine Arts . She is a member of the American Abstract Artists . Gabriele Evertz lives and works in New York . In 2012 she received the Basil H. Alkazzi Award for Excellence in Painting .

In addition to her artistic work, she has also been a professor of painting at Hunter College since 1998 . For many decades, the Department of Art & Art History at Hunter College has been known for the fact that its teachers deal intensively with the study of color painting in their own artistic work. Those who worked there included and still include Evertz, who is referred to as a " key member" of this group, and others. a. Robert Swain, Sandford Wurmfeld, Vincent Longo, and Doug Ohlson. Critics therefore speak in this context of a specific “Hunter College Color School(Hunter Color School) , which has developed over the decades in dealing with the phenomenon of color.

Although all artists have found their respective individual means of expression, they entered the study of the phenomenology of color in an effort about the color of a "transformative effect" (transformative effect) to initiate the viewer.

Artistic work

“Color to me is the most important problem, it's a pioneering problem, it's a very new experience to not tell a story, not make the color the burden of a symbolic meaning. Just perceive and understand, what's the sensation is of color. Intense colors give me that sense of aliveness. "

“Color is the most important problem for me, it is a groundbreaking problem, it is a whole new experience, not telling a story, not making color the burden of a symbolic meaning. Just perceive and understand what the feeling of color is. Intense colors give me the feeling of liveliness. "

- Gabriele Evertz : Original sound

Evertz's works consist of vertical ribbons of different widths laid out side by side, for which she uses all the colors of the color wheel. In her latest compositions she turns to the color gray and its effects on surrounding colors. Occasionally she also uses metallic colors, as these reflect the light and can set additional color impulses. She often repeats certain color constellations within an image.

When looking at the painting, the eye swings back and forth between seeing the entire picture and concentrating on individual aspects of the work. As a result, the viewer perceives a kind of vibration of the color : “The resulting paintings present a flood of visual information, in which color and shape move in and out of the sequence and symmetry that causes the eye to move through undulating, pulsating spaces move. " (the Resulting paintings present a barrage of visual information did moves color and shape in and out of sequence and symmetry Causing the eye to move through undulating, pulsating spaces.) This is especially apparent when the viewer different distances takes the picture . The resulting parallax intensifies the experience of the vibration and oscillation of the color.

“Without the viewer, the painting doesn't exist. The viewer brings the painting to life. "

“The picture does not exist without the viewer. The viewer brings the picture to life. "

- Gabriele Evertz : Original sound

Only through the perception of the composition by the viewer, through his movement in the room and the resulting different perception of closeness and distance, does the oscillation and vibration arise, which turns viewing the works into an individual and possibly even spiritual experience: " People think geometry is very static, but it isn't. She moves all the time. I keep the same color sequence but change the background. And as soon as you get involved, your perception changes too. The colors are the actors. They are really vessels of contemplation. ” (People think geometry is very static, but it isn't. It's moving all the time. I'm keeping the same color sequence but changing the background. So as you engage in it, it changes . The colors are the actors. These are really vessels of contemplation.)
