Gabriele Spindler (* 1972 in Ried im Innkreis ) is an Austrian art historian and director of the Landesgalerie Linz .

Career

Gabriele Spindler grew up in Upper Austria and studied art history and Italian at the University of Salzburg and French at the University of Vienna . She wrote her diploma thesis on the topic “On the affinity of interior and fashion. An analytical comparison of theoretical and practical concepts by Adolf Loos and the Wiener Werkstätte ”.

She completed academic internships at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection Venice (1995) and at the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris (1998, collaboration on the exhibition and publication “Les Années Pop”).

From 1995 to 1999 Gabriele Spindler was a public relations officer at the Austrian Gallery Belvedere in Vienna. In 2000 she moved to the Landesgalerie Linz , where she worked as a collection manager and curator for modern and contemporary art until 2012 . In 2006 she went to the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin as a guest curator for six months . In 2009/10 she was the curator for the city of Linz's art purchases. In 2011 she and Andreas Strohhammer published a monograph with a catalog raisonné of the paintings by the Austrian artist Franz Sedlacek (1891–1945). In 2012 she became head of the State Gallery Linz am Upper Austrian State Museum . There she realized projects, exhibitions and publications on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries with a focus on the Austrian interwar period, photography and contemporary art .
