Gadolinium (III) chloride is a chemical compound from the group of chlorides .
Extraction and presentation
Gadolinium (III) chloride can be obtained by reacting gadolinium with hydrochloric acid at 600 ° C.
It can also be obtained through the synthesis and subsequent thermal decomposition of (NH 4 ) 2 [GdCl 5 ] at 300 ° C.
properties
Gadolinium (III) chloride is a colorless, hygroscopic, water-soluble compound which, in sufficiently pure form, crystallizes out of water and gives transparent clear crystals of a hexahydrate (GdCl 3 • 6 H 2 O). The hexahydrate is monoclinic with the space group P 2 / n (space group no. 13, position 2) and two formula units per unit cell . The anhydrous form has a crystal structure with the space group P 6 3 / m (no. 176) .
use
Gadolinium (III) chloride is used in the synthesis and NMR studies of the paramagnetic GdPCTA [12] and GdPCTA [13] complexes with possible use as a contrast agent for NMR.
