Gaj is a village with a school administration office of Gmina Mogilany in the Powiat Krakowski of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1088, in 1277 there was a wooden church of the Benedictines of Tyniec . The name Gaj is the Polish name for grove .

When Poland was first partitioned in 1772, Gaj became part of the new Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria of the Habsburg Empire (from 1804).

In 1801 and 1808 General Józef Bem spent the summer holidays in the local manor.

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Gaj came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the General Government .

From 1975 to 1998 Gaj was part of the Krakow Voivodeship .

The state road DK 7 runs through Gaj, part of the very busy so-called Zakopianka , which connects Krakow with Zakopane .
