The Salzburger Kopf is 654.2 m above sea level. NN the third highest elevation in the Westerwald after the Fuchskaute and the Stegskopf .
The north side of the ridge is almost treeless; in the south, forest strips and areas alternate with open areas. On the summit there is a peculiar transmission tower in the form of a cuboid, red and white painted steel lattice frame.

Geographical location
The mountain is 7 km north of Rennerod and 4 km west of the Fuchskaute, directly at the intersection of federal highways 414 (south) and 54 (east).
It is framed by the towns of Salzburg in the south, Stein-Neukirch in the north (the district boundary runs across the ridge), Hof in the west and Bretthausen in the east.
Gallows Mountain
The 649.7 m above sea level belongs to the Salzburg head in the broader sense. NN high Galgenberg, on which the ridge ends 900 m west-southwest.
The county road leads over the saddle (635 m) from Salzburg to Stein.
To the south of the summit, the Westerwald Association has erected a memorial for its members who died in the world wars.
The Galgenberg is remarkable because of the excellent visibility it opens to the west and south.
Watershed
The Salzburger Kopf is part of the watershed between Dill and Sieg . The water of the Erlenbach, which rises on its northeast flank, reaches the Dill via the Haigerbach. A brook, which rises southeast of the elevation, flows into the Sieg tributary Nister , which rises about 2 km east of it . Another brook, which flows from the northwest flank of the Galgenberg, flows into the Nister tributary Black Nister.

The elevation was still in 1788 place of the three courts Marienberg , Emmerichenhain and Neukirch .
The transmission tower was operated by the US armed forces during the Cold War. Today it is owned by the Vodafone company.
tourism
Because of its easy accessibility (from the north) and the wide view, the mountain is popular with day trippers.
It is also a stage destination for hikers. The main hiking trails I (Königswinter - Hachenburg - Herborn) and 6 (Burbach - Rennerod - Limburg) of the Westerwaldverein as well as the European long-distance hiking trail E1 lead over the back.
On the eastern slope there is a ski slope with a lift that is suitable for both beginners and advanced skiers. A snow tube facility has been available as a further attraction since 2011 .
