Galgenbergsiedlung
The southern part of the village of Schipkau in the Brandenburg district of Oberspreewald-Lausitz is known as the Galgenbergsiedlung (also simply called the settlement ) .
history
The Galgenbergsiedlung was built in the late 1950s / early 1960s and was a new settlement for the former residents of the Vogelberg colony , who had to give way to the Klettwitz open-cast mine . The authorities at the time did everything they could to keep the resettlers happy. In addition to spacious apartments and terraced houses, the culture center, a swimming pool and a sports field with an open-air stage and parks were built in a short time. Small shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs opened in the new settlement. Even plans for a rail connection from Lauchhammer and Schwarzheide in the direction of Sallgast and Großräschen are said to have existed, but they were put down with the final shutdown of the Schipkau-Finsterwalder Railway .
Every year for Easter there was an invitation to motocross on the Galgenberg. The open-air theater always hosted open-air cinema on Fridays from April to September. On May 1, and the Mining Convention, there were on the associated Festplatz a folk festival with a stage show and concert event.
Surname
The settlement owes its name to an old hill of the same name southwest of Schipkau near the old post mile. In the Middle Ages, should one on this hill a gallows erected. After the Anna-Süd opencast mine withdrew, three hill-like overburden deposits remained at the same location, which are now known as Gallows Mountains.
