The Gasometer Baumgarten in the district part Baumgarten of the 14th district of Vienna , Penzing , was one of Vienna erected municipality gas tank .

Location

The gasometer was located in the northwest corner of the Gleisdreieck between the two connecting railway bridges over the Wien River and the Westbahn north of Hackinger Strasse .

history

The container, which was put into operation by the municipal gas works on August 1, 1933, whose task was to ensure an even gas supply for customers in the west and south-west of Vienna, remained in operation until August 17, 1982.

During the Battle of Vienna in April 1945 , the gasometer was so badly damaged that it had to be decommissioned; however, according to the Viennese newspaper Das kleine Volksblatt , it was allegedly empty throughout the war. From May 1947 onwards, over 700 damages of various sizes that occurred during the fighting were resealed on the 50 meter high, 30 meter diameter and 30,000 cubic meter gas construction. In 1983 it was canceled.
