history

Although the exact age of the inn is not documented, research assumes that the tavern rights were granted to the Hirschen when the city was founded. The inn may have existed since the 13th century. A written mention can currently only be proven from the year 1523. Today's Gasthof Hirschen was sometimes also called the Zum Goldenen Hirschen tavern or the Zum Hirschen inn in the course of its history . Today it consists of a six-storey late Gothic core building, to which two houses of approximately the same age and height are connected in the west and a somewhat lower half-timbered building in the east .

Major alterations were made to the core structure of the inn in 1573 and 1662. This is indicated, among other things, by the corresponding dates that have been carved into the upper lintel of the gable window. The window pillars in particular are likely to date from the 16th century. During the renovation in the 17th century, various baroque doors, panels, banisters , etc. were installed, but only a few of them have survived. In addition, the rare facade painting, discovered in 1974 during an exterior renovation, which was rated as “one of the most important art-historical discoveries in the Zurich area in recent years”, was probably created. In the 19th century, a Biedermeier wing was finally added, which included a dance hall .

The Hirschen was originally located right next to the old Rhine bridge, which was demolished in 1919 due to the damming of the Rhine, and thus on an important traffic axis. The 17th and 18th centuries can be described as the heyday of the inn, when it was visited as the “first house on the square” by numerous well-known and “distinguished” personalities. For example by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , who visited the house on October 26, 1797 and noted in his diary: “At 12 o'clock in Eglisau. Gasthof zum Hirsch. View of the Rhine , from half past one. "

Todays use

In 2000, the Zurich textile entrepreneur and collector Werner Dubno acquired the inn and extensively restored it over a period of four years, with financial support from the Zurich Monument Preservation. In 2007 the catering and hotel operations were resumed. Around a year after the reopening, ICOMOS Suisse named the inn “Historic Hotel of the Year 2009”. The gastronomic offer is divided between the bistro on the ground floor and the restaurant on the first floor. For banquets and conferences , the house also has the historic dance hall from the 19th century, which is now called the Belle Epoque Hall , and the so-called Goethe room . Overnight stays are possible in a total of seven historic rooms and suites .
