Wienerberg gasworks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wienerberg gasworks in Vienna's 10th district of Favoriten was the last privately run gasworks in Vienna . Since January 1, 1912, it has only served communities south of Vienna.

history

The Wienerberg gasworks was built by the Wiener Gasindustrie-Aktiengesellschaft, founded in 1872, between 1882 and 1884 on an area at the intersection of Wienerbergstrasse and Eibesbrunnergasse. In 1854 the Austrian gas lighting company merged with its Gaudenzdorfer gasworks and the Vienna gas industry company.

While the English Imperial Continental Gas Association closed its last gas works in Vienna after the lighting contract between itself and the City of Vienna had expired on December 31, 1911, the Austrian Gas Lighting Corporation continued to run the Wienerberg gas works, but was only allowed to customers deliver outside the city limits.

On January 1, 1940, the Austrian Gas Lighting Corporation and with it its Wienerberg, Wiener Neudorf and Traiskirchen gas works were taken over by the City of Vienna. It is not known when the shutdown took place, however, due to the housing shortage in the administrative buildings of the shutdown gasworks Wienerberg and Mödling, apartments were set up for gasworks employees in the post-war period .

technology

In 1903 the Wienerberg gasworks had 14 furnaces with 9 retorts each, four of which were built according to the Liegl system and the remaining 10 according to the Munich-Stettin system. Three gasometers acted as gas storage . About 140 workers were employed that year.

Coverage area

Together with the Gaudenzdorf gas works , the districts of Meidling , Penzing , Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus and parts of the districts of Favoriten , Hietzing and Ottakring were completely supplied in 1903 .

The communities of Atzgersdorf , Liesing , Mauer , Perchtoldsdorf , Rodaun , Kalksburg , Siebenhirten and Vösendorf located south of Vienna were only supplied by the Wienerberg gasworks .

Reuse

On November 28, 1960, the Wienerberg gasometer was opened with a capacity of 300,000 cubic meters of gas. After the Vienna gas supply had been converted to natural gas, it was demolished in 1987.
