Banded forest hover fly

The banded forest hover fly or yellow bumblebee hover fly ( Volucella inanis ) is a fly from the family of hover flies (Syrphidae).

features

The banded forest hover fly reaches a body length of 14 to 16 millimeters and has an oval-shaped body. Their wings are tinted rust-red at the base and have a washed-out, smoky, dark spot near the tip. The head is indented below the antennae , the yellow face is clearly protruding below. The wine-red compound eyes are long hairy, those of the females are naked. The antenna bristle is feathered.

The mesonotum is colored metallic black, the sides are yellow. The tag is yellow-brown and has long black hair on the edge. The first part of the abdomen is black, the rest are yellow and have a total of three black cross bars. Between the first abdominal segment and the first black band there is a narrow black connection in the middle of the back, whereby the first yellow segment ring is faintly separated into two parts. The legs are colored rust-red.

The species is easy to confuse with the larger hornet hover fly ( Volucella zonaria ), which only has two dark bands on its abdomen.

Occurrence

The animals occur in Europe east over Central Asia to Siberia from the lowlands to high altitudes. They are common in the south of Central Europe, but rare in the north. They are found from May to September near forests on flowers such as thistles , valerian , oregano , privet , scabies , horse mint and umbellifers ; however, they prefer the color red. The larvae develop as parasites in the nests of hornets and German wasps .
