Gebhard XXIII. from Alvensleben
Gebhard XXIII. von Alvensleben (born April 15, 1584 ; † June 6, 1627 ) was pledgee and governor of Beeskow and Storkow (1613-1625) and of Cottbus and Peitz (1625-1627).
family
He came from the Altmark noble family von Alvensleben and was the third son of District Administrator Gebhard XXII. von Alvensleben (1543–1609) to Neugattersleben and Catharina von Pentz (1561–1586). He married Christine von Dieskau (1589–1636) in Köpenick in 1613 , daughter of the Brandenburg Secret Council Hieronymus von Dieskau and his wife Anna von Pflugk , and had eight children with her, including the later Magdeburg councilor Gebhard XXV. from Alvensleben to Neugattersleben . Four of his daughters died as children and are buried in the Marienkirche in Beeskow . His half-brother was the Magdeburg canon Kuno von Alvensleben (1588–1638).
Life
Gebhard von Alvensleben studied from 1604 together with his brother Kuno at the University of Wittenberg and then in Strasbourg . He was multi-talented, had primarily mathematical interests and played several musical instruments. After the death of his father, he initially lived on the property in Pfütztal, which was redeemed again in 1612 by the Counts of Mansfeld. From the redemption amount he lent 26,000 thalers to the Elector Johann Sigismund von Brandenburg. For this he was appointed captain of the office of Beeskow and Storkow by the elector in 1613 . During his tenure there were numerous conflicts with the aristocratic families resident in the area and with the citizens of Beeskow.
Thereupon Johann Sigesmund's successor, Elector Georg Wilhelm , transferred the mortgage to the offices of Cottbus and Peitz and appointed him in 1625 as the local governor. In 1627, however, he suddenly died on a trip from the "flux or sticky river". He was buried in the upper church in Cottbus, where his grave monument is still behind the altar. The Alvensleben's hope of turning this important rule into hereditary possession was destroyed by the Thirty Years' War , which left the descendants of Neugattersleben impoverished.
