The Poppenhausen Memorial commemorates the execution of Buchenwald prisoners during a deterrent carried out by the Gestapo on May 11, 1942 . It lies on the road between Poppenhausen and Einöd in the Hildburghausen district .

history

In the forest on the road to Einöd, about two kilometers north of Poppenhausen and three kilometers east of Hellingen, there has been a memorial since 1966/67 that commemorates a massacre on May 11, 1942. There, in a reprisal on the orders of were Reich SS nineteen Polish prisoners of the Buchenwald concentration camp and the Polish forced laborers in January Sowka by the SS hanged .

The execution took place on three gallows erected for this purpose . The forced laborers Jan Sówka and Nikolaus Stadtnik had previously stabbed the police chief Albin Gottwalt at the same spot on April 26, 1942 after he had beaten them up. Nikolaus Stadtnik escaped and Jan Sówka was arrested at the Bamberg train station . All Polish forced laborers in the area had to be present at the execution. In addition, district administrators, district leaders and other representatives of the party and state were on site.

The circumstances of this terrorist action were researched by Bernd Ahnicke from Hildburghausen. Afterwards, on May 11, 2014, a new plaque was unveiled at the crime scene with the names of all 20 victims in the presence of their bereaved families. The German teacher from the vocational school in Kolno , Urszula Banach, found out almost all the families of the victims and invited them to the unveiling of the memorial plaque.
