Poppenhausen is a district of the city of Heldburg in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

location

Poppenhausen is located in the Heldburger Land on the county road 502 and on the Thuringian-Bavarian border in the southernmost tip of Thuringia. The corridor is docked and wooded.

history

The village was first mentioned on December 21, 1184. The history of Poppenhausen goes back to 1340, when "Boppenhusen" was pledged to the Lords of Hohenstein. From 1516 a pastor was resident in the village. The first teacher is recorded in 1599. In 1626 the plague raged in town. After the Thirty Years War , nine people still lived in the village. House No. 26 is said to have been built around 1672.

Memorial: Massacre of May 11, 1942

In the forest on the road to Einöd there has been a memorial since 1966/67 that commemorates a massacre on May 11, 1942. There, 19 Polish prisoners from the Buchenwald concentration camp and the Polish slave laborer Jan Sowka were hanged by the SS as part of a retaliatory measure . (see Poppenhausen Memorial )

Culture and sights

The nave of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary was built in 1858 in neo-Gothic style with a stone star vault .

To the north-east of Poppenhausen, the former border strip to the right and left of the Helling brook is designated as a protected landscape component (GLB) "Krautwiesen wetland". It serves as a breeding and feeding habitat for endangered bird species. It is located in the European Bird Protection Area (VSG) "Rodachaue with Bischofsau and Althellinger Grund" and is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas .
