construction

The area of the Hindenburg barracks , which was abandoned in 2003, houses the professional fire brigade , the ambulance station , the SEG rescue service , the city center volunteer fire brigade , the hazardous goods train and the disaster control department. Since 2010 there has been a training facility here, where sniffer dogs from various aid organizations and their guides are trained. When the work is complete, around 120 firefighters, paramedics and administrative staff will be working at the security center. In the course of the renovations, the approximately 6.9 hectare site will be directly connected to the Hansaring so that emergency vehicles can quickly reach all parts of the city.

Iodine tablets

The security management center store about 5.5 million potassium iodide tablets (known colloquially as "iodine tablets") is that in an accident in a nuclear power plant commissioned by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection within twelve hours of the population in Schleswig-Holstein , Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as well as parts of Lower Saxony are to be distributed. These tablets are designed to prevent radioactive iodine from being absorbed into the body. Neumünster is one of seven locations nationwide where the Federal Office for Radiation Protection has set up iodine depots.

New construction of the rescue and fire station

On February 4, 2012, construction work began on the new rescue and fire station on the site. The construction cost around 12.5 million euros and was completed in autumn 2014. The rescue and fire station was inaugurated on October 11th with a ceremony and a family celebration. A total of 132 employees from the fire brigade, rescue and disaster control services moved into the new station in November. The control center , administration rooms, workshops, rest and conference rooms, a training course and a fitness studio are located in the approximately 6,700 square meter building . Since the area was used by the Hermann & Sager leather factory between 1889 and 1927 , the soil is still contaminated with anthrax spores . Special occupational safety requirements were therefore set for the earthworks.
