Go to bed, not to war is an Italian-Spanish fictional film from 1966 with Catherine Spaak , Philippe Leroy and OW Fischer as the German submarine captain in the leading roles.

action

Somewhere on the seas of Europe, in the mid-1960s: Since the end of the Second World War, a German submarine has been cruising through the depths, led by a German captain, for whom the Second World War is still not over, because he is still waiting Instructions from Berlin. Commander Backhaus wants to be ready just in case if there should be a renewed fight. Immediately after the end of the war, the bearded fur seal fished a shipwrecked baby from the sea, which was floating helplessly on the waves. It is the Italian Ombrina. He takes her on board, and henceforth Ombrina is doomed to share the captain's fate under the sea and without daylight. One day she matured into a beautiful young woman.

Years have passed since then, and in this time of isolation Ombrina drives the longing to get back to the outside world. Only when it comes to a collision with the sailing yacht of Panamanian billionaire Don Getulio does her dream seem to come true. Ombrina climbs on the boat, learns in passing that Don Getulio is her father, and meets the ship's doctor Nicola there. They both fall in love and decide to put an end to the bizarre wanderings of the submarine commander Backhaus. Finally, the captain trusts the young fortune, who will find peace on an island, and takes command with his crew while his submarine sinks to the seabed.

Production notes

Go to bed, not to war was filmed in Italy in 1966 and premiered there on December 23, 1966. The German premiere was on August 23, 1968.

For OW Fischer, this barely noticed flick, in which, as in The Marquis - the man who wanted to sell himself and later played an eccentric in Liebesvögel , ended his three decades of continuous film activity. He returned to the big screen for the last time after three years of abstinence in 1969.

The Italian title of this mixture of comedy, drama and island romance with a pacifist closing message was, so to speak, an anticipation of the slogan of the flower power movement Make love, not war, which emerged shortly afterwards .

Reviews

“Failed attempt at an anti-capitalist and anti-militarist grotesque: torpedoes sink before they reach their destination. Of bloodless elegance, this is a soulless lesson in a liquid state. "

"Undemanding comedy with a hair-drawn, silly plot."
