The Geißspitze is a 2,334 meter high mountain in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg in the Montafon region . The Geißspitze is located in the Rätikon above Tschagguns .

Location and surroundings

The Geißspitze lies entirely in the municipality of Tschagguns, 6.8 km southwest of the center. It is the highest point in a branch of the Golmer and Zerneuer Grat , which branches off between Wilder Mann and Kreuzspitze in an easterly direction.

In the north, the Waschtobel separates the Geißspitze from the Latschätzkopf , in the east the slope descends into the Gauertal and in the south into the Öfa valley.

In the avalanche winter of 1999, an avalanche swept from the Geißspitze to over the road leading to the Lindauer Hütte and tore a path into the forest that is still visible today.

natural reserve

The summit area of the Geißspitze and the ridge up to the Wilden Mann and the Kreuzspitze are located in a large-scale biotope that is entered in the Vorarlberg biotope inventory due to the geological diversity and the resulting biodiversity . The steep slopes are prone to landslides, so-called plaiks , through which the ground is churned, with minerals from the subsoil reaching the surface and serving as food for lush lawns and meadows.

Ascent

Lindauer Hut

The ascent can be done through the Gauertal via the Lindauer Hütte ( 1744  m ). From the hut it is another 1½ hours over the Geißspitzsteig to the summit. An ascent from there on skis is possible, but requires a suitable avalanche location due to the steep grass slopes.

Golmer Höhenweg

As an alternative, there is a ride with the Golmerbahn to the mountain station (1890 m) and a hike along the Golmer Höhenweg over the Golmer Joch ( 2124  m ), the Latschätzkopf ( 2219  m ) and the Kreuzjoch ( 2261  m ) to the Geißspitze.
Here the walking time to the summit is about 2 hours.
