Gene Phillips

Gene Phillips (actually Eugene Floyd Phillips , born July 25, 1915 in St. Louis , † January 10, 1990 in Lakewood (California) ) was an American jump blues musician ( guitar , vocals ). His greatest popularity was in the R&B scene in Los Angeles around 1950.

Live and act

Phillips played in the bands of Dewey Jackson and Jimmy Powell in St. Louis . He later took lessons with Floyd Smith on the steel guitar . Around 1945 he played in Lorenzo Flennoy's trio ; In the middle of the year he worked on recordings of Wynonie Harris and Jack McVea for Apollo . At the end of 1945 he recorded in a band under the direction of Bob Mosely , in which u. a. Lucky Thompson , Marshall Royal , Lee Young and Charles Mingus played; the band singer was Marion Abernathy . Further recordings were made during this time with Duke Henderson , Wild Bill Moore , Joe Liggins , Amos Milburn , Lloyd Glenn , Johnny Otis , from 1950 with Percy Mayfield , Preston Love , Calvin Boze .

Under his own name he recorded a number of titles for Modern Records with his band Gene Phillips and His Rhythm Aces from 1947 to 1950 , including a. Big Bill Broonzy's “Just a Dream (On My Mind)”, “Big Fat Mama”, “Big Legs”, “Rock Bottom” and “Stinkin 'Drunk”. During the recordings, u. a. Trumpeter Jake Porter , drummer Al "Cake" Wichard , Maxwell Davis , Marshall Royal, Jack McVea, Bumps Myers , Willard McDaniel and Lloyd Glenn with. His recordings for Modern were influenced by T-Bone Walker . After Tom Lord , he was involved in 34 recording sessions between 1945 and 1955.
