Generation Iron ( German Generation Eisen ) is an American documentary by the director Vlad Yudin from 2013. The documentary accompanies professional bodybuilders, u. a. Phil Heath and Kai Greene , during their preparation and the subsequent competition at the Mr. Olympia 2012 in Las Vegas. Mickey Rourke acts as the narrator . In the cinemas came Generation Iron on 20 September 2013; DVD and Bluray were released on April 4, 2014.

Generation Iron introduces the professional bodybuilders Phil Heath , Kai Greene , Dennis Wolf , Branch Warren , Roelly Winklaar , Hidetada Yamagishi , Ben Pakulski and Victor Martinez as well as their trainers or training partners . The documentation shows the preparations of the athletes for the Mr. Olympia 2012 , their different training approaches as well as their training locations and short excerpts from their training. The leisure activities were also filmed, for example Kai Greene painting or Branch Warren riding as well as scenes from everyday life. While Victor Martinez broke off the preparations and was only able to drive to Las Vegas as a spectator, it is shown how Roelly Winklaar first had to qualify. He couldn't qualify in the first competition. He won his qualification at the 2012 IFBB Nordic Pro in Lahti, Finland.
In the second part of the documentary, the protagonists will be shown in Las Vegas at the Mr. Olympia weekend from September 28th to 30th, 2012. a. at the press conference, pre-judging and individual posing as well as the award ceremony. Arnold Schwarzenegger , Lou Ferrigno and Mike Katz , the protagonists of the documentary drama Pumping Iron , have short appearances and are interviewed in Generation Iron . Busta Rhymes , Ronnie Coleman and Michael Jai White also have short scenes . In the credits, the filmmakers commemorate Joe Weider, who died six months before the film was released, and his brother Ben Weider, who died in 2008.

The film was released in the US on September 20, 2013 and grossed US $ 245,000 on the first weekend. In total, the box office earnings were US $ 849,521 worldwide. When Nevada International Film Festival in 2013 was Generation Iron awarded in the category documentation with the Platinum Reel Award. As part of the Accolade Competition in November 2013, the film received the Award of Excellence for the best documentary and Mickey Rourke the Award of Merit for the background commentary. Bodybuilding magazine Flex presented Vlad Yudin with the Steve Stone Vanguard Award in 2013.
Generation Iron received mixed reviews in the press. In the New York Times , Nicole Herrington criticized the lack of dynamism and that the film was about 20 minutes too long; In addition, the film misses a growing tension compared to Pumping Iron . In the Washington Post, however , Sean O'Connell recognized the valuable insight into the small community of professional bodybuilders that the documentary offers viewers. Justin Lowe found for the Hollywood Reporter that Vlad Yudin had clearly created a sports documentary, although Yudin wanted to make a quasi-sequel or remake of the docu-drama Pumping Iron .
