Geoffroi III. de Pompadour (born May 15, 1430 in Arnac-Pompadour , † May 8, 1514 in Paris ) was a French Catholic clergyman of the 15th and 16th centuries .

Life

Geoffroi de Pompadour was born in Pompadour Castle , the second son of Golfier Martial, Count of Pompadour, Baron von Bret and Saint-Cyr-la-Roche and Isabelle de Comborn . Due to the primogeniture not taken into account in the succession, he was designated by his family for the clergy.

He began his ecclesiastical career as vicar general of the diocese of Évreux and was subsequently cathedral canon of the archbishopric of Lyon before he was ordained bishop of Angoulême in 1465 . In 1470 de Pompadour moved to the episcopal office of the Diocese of Périgueux , which he headed until 1486. During this time he was also the acting head of the abbey of Saint-Bénigne , where he ran the business on behalf of the incapacitated abbot.

After the death of King Ludwig XI. he was appointed a member of the Regency Council for Charles VIII and served under this as President of the Chamber of Accounts and Grand Chaplain of France.

After the death of Bishop Jean de Bourbon in 1485, the cathedral chapter of the diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay unanimously elected the former provost and archdeacon of Rodez , Pierre de Chalencon, as his successor. Due to his close ties to the court, Geoffroi de Pompadour managed to convince King Charles VIII of a different solution - in exchange for the diocese of Périgueux, he himself took over the post of shepherd in the diocese of Le Puy-en-Velay.
