Pierre von Foix the Younger

Pierre von Foix the Younger ( Latin Petrus de Fuxo , Italian Pietro Fuxo juniore ; born February 7, 1449 in Pau , † August 10, 1490 in Rome ) was a French Catholic clergyman of the 15th century .

Life

Pierre von Foix was born at Foix Castle , the second son of Gaston IV. Count von Foix and Queen Eleanor of Navarre . He was the nephew of King Louis the Holy and great-nephew of Cardinal Pierre de Foix the Elder. As the second-born son after his brother Gaston , he was not included in the succession due to his primogeniture. His family designated him for the clergy at an early age.

His uncle, the cardinal, promoted his nephew's classical education and sent him to study at the Sorbonne University in Paris . He later completed his academic training at the University of Ferrara under Felino Sandeo, one of the most famous lawyers of the era, and obtained a doctorate in both rights .

After completing his studies, he traveled to the Vatican in Rome on the recommendation of the Cardinal von Foix , where he gave a speech to Pope Paul II and the College of Cardinals . While still there, he joined the Order of Friars Minor as a Franciscan , only to be given the post of Apostolic Protonotary by the Pope a little later .

On May 17, 1475 he was elected Bishop of Vannes . Pope Sixtus IV confirmed his appointment on March 11, 1476 and Foix retained the bishopric until his death. In addition, he was also appointed Bishop of Aire on July 31, 1475 .

Pope Sixtus IV appointed him cardinal deacon on the occasion of the consistory of December 7, 1476, and Pierre von Foix received the cardinal's hat on January 10, 1477 in St. Peter's Basilica . On the occasion of this appointment, the church of Santi Cosma e Damiano in Rome was assigned to him as the title diaconate.

In addition to these offices, Foix also served as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Bayonne , the Archdiocese of Palermo , whose Archbishop he became in 1485 and, from 1489 until his death, of the Diocese of Malta . Pierre von Foix the Younger also held the abbotship of the monasteries Saint-Antoine-et-Saint-Pierre in Lézat-sur-Lèze , Saint-Savin , Sainte-Mélaine in Rennes and Saint-Bénigne .

As a cardinal, Foix did not take part in the conclave of 1484, which ended with the election of Innocent VIII as Pope.

Around 1485 he brokered a peace agreement in Guerrefolle between King Charles VIII of France and Francis II , Duke of Brittany.

Due to his close family connection to the Kingdom of Aragón , Foix was close friends with King Ferdinand I of Naples and also visited him in his kingdom.

Pierre von Foix the Younger died on August 10, 1490 in Rome and was buried in the local church of San Trifone in Posterula, which was demolished in 1746.
