The Austrian Society for Geomechanics ( English Austrian Society for Geomechanics , ÖGG respectively. ÖGG) is the trade association for scientific Geomechanics in civil engineering in Austria .

history

Leopold Müller , engineering geologist and one of the co-founders of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NAT / NÖT) , worked in Salzburg in the 1950s after working in Kaprun . Here in 1951 he initiated a colloquium on borderline issues in rock construction and rock mechanical technologies. This made Salzburg - along with Leoben - an Austrian center for mining and mining ( Salzburg circle of Stini students; Austrian school of rock mechanics ).

In 1962 was in Salzburg, the International Society of Rock Mechanics  ( International Society for rock Mechanics , ISRM; International Laboratory of rock ), which since 1966 at the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil  resident (LNEC) in Lisbon. The Austrian Society for Geomechanics was founded in 1968 as the national society of the ISRM. It is organized as an association .

In 1998 the company was structured and four specialist sections were formed. In 2008 the association's statutes were modernized.

organization

The company is based in Salzburg , on Innsbrucker Bundesstrasse (Maxglan). The chairman is Wulf Schubert , Head of the Rock Mechanics and Tunneling Institute at the University of Graz (as of 2016) In 2015 the ÖGG had around 600 full members and over 40 supporting members. For interdisciplinary cooperation, it is divided into individual specialist sections and working groups as required.

The ÖGG is the Austrian representative of the International Society for Rock Mechanics  (ISRM, its regional authority, National Adhering Body ). She is also a member of the Austrian National Committee ITA Austria of the International Tunneling Association  (ITA).

Agendas

The association is non-profit and purely scientifically oriented.

Its tasks are (wording of the statutes):

  1. Scientific research into the properties of soil and rock and their behavior under all kinds of influences;
  2. Maintaining relationships with scientific institutions with similar objectives at home and abroad, as well as with neighboring subject areas;
  3. The exchange of experience and ideas in the field of planning, execution and maintenance of structures in soil and rock between representatives of the construction industry, scientific institutions, engineering offices, clients and authorities;
  4. The improvement of construction methods, dimensioning and design of structures in the ground and rock with the aim of a safe, economical and environmentally friendly construction method;
  5. The preparation and publication of booklets, guidelines and other publications related to the planning, execution and maintenance of structures in soil and rock.

The four specialist sections deal with the following topics:

In addition to its own Geomechanics Colloquium , the company also sponsors numerous other international events in the field and industry.

Geomechanics Colloquium

This scientific conference has been held since 1951. It is usually held annually in the Salzburg Congress Center and, along with the biennial Austrian Tunnel Day in Vienna ( jointly held by ITA Austria ), is the most important major mining event in Austria. In 2014, for example, it was combined with the Tunnel Day, and in 2015 with the EUROCK of the ISRM. The conference reports appear in the Geomechanik und Tunnelbau magazine published by the ÖGG .

Since 1983 the ÖGG has published a specialist journal for engineering geology, geomechanics and tunneling, FELSBAU - Rock and Soil Engineering , since 2008 geomechanics and tunneling , since 2009 also in English geomechanics and tunneling .

The magazine appears six times a year in special issues on special topics, particularly tunnel construction. The conference reports of the Geomechanics Colloquium and the Austrian Tunnel Day appear regularly in this series .

It is published by Ernst & Sohn , Publishing House for Architecture and Technical Sciences, in Berlin, the publishing house belongs to the John Wiley Group (Wiley-Blackwell), which is why the magazine has also been available on the Wiley Online Library web portal since 2008 .

The editor-in-chief is Helmut Richter from Ernst & Sohn. Bernd Moritz (ÖBB-Infrastruktur, Graz) and Robert Galler (Montanuniversität Leoben) are currently responsible (advisory board chairmen). The advisory board is made up of ÖÖG members and international.
