The University of Leoben (Leoben, Montanuni, MUL) is a Technical University and Austria's only university for mountain - and metallurgy .

The special features of the Alma Mater Leobiensis include the interdisciplinary interwoven courses of study and the strong inner cohesion, which is also a result of its manageable size and the old Knappen traditions. The small MU Leoben, together with the Graz University of Technology and Vienna University of Technology, forms the Austrian Universities of Technology (TU Austria) association with around 42,000 students, 460 million euros in total assets and 8,800 employees.

history

Main building (2005)

The Montan University was founded on November 4, 1840 by Archduke Johann in Vordernberg as the "Steiermärkisch-Ständische Montanlehranstalt". One of the first teachers and first director was the mining specialist Peter Tunner . He succeeded in getting the school taken over by the state and moving it to the nearby district town of Leoben , where operations began on November 1, 1849.

In 1904, with an imperial resolution, the name was changed to “Montanistische Hochschule” and the right to award doctorates , which put it on an equal footing with technical universities. In 1934 there was an organizational merger with the Graz University of Technology , which, however, caused the number of students to collapse and was therefore canceled again in 1937. From 1955 onwards, the traditional fields of study mining and metallurgy were supplemented by further subject areas. In 1975 it was renamed "Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL)" on the basis of the University Organization Act.

The neo-baroque “old building” of the Montanuni, which is still in use today , was put into operation on October 22nd, 1910, among others in the presence of the Imperial and Royal Minister for Public Works , August Ritt (1852–1934). The more recent additions date from 1970 and were officially opened on November 4, 2009 after 15 months of renovation and renovation work. There was an urgent need for enlarged lecture halls, especially due to the strong increase in the number of first-semester students in recent years. The university sports center also got its own premises.

Research in Leoben is based on the value chain from raw materials to raw materials and materials to the finished component or system. The core areas of mining, metallurgy and materials are supplemented by cross-sectional areas such as the basic scientific subjects, environmental technology, and business and economics. Close cooperation with industrial partners is maintained.

Some examples:

  • In the core area of ​​mining (raw material extraction and processing), mining engineers from Leoben are working on the EU project TUNCONSTRUCT (41 partners from eleven countries) to make European tunneling and maintenance more efficient and economical. The focus of the Leoben scientists is the investigation of different driving methods for the stability of the cavity.
  • Scientists from the core area of ​​metallurgy developed a new apparatus for measuring the temperature of slag, with which the purity of high-quality steel used in the aviation industry could be improved. In the electroslag remelting process, this enables a reduction in energy consumption while increasing productivity at the same time.
  • Materials scientists from Leoben are researching the fundamentals of new types of thin hard material layers for tools that become harder by themselves, have a lubricating effect and can heal themselves. The aim is to develop layers that make tools almost as hard as diamonds.
  • Environmental engineers developed a process to use heavy metal residue from flue gas desulphurization in refineries as a nitrogen reducing agent in cement production. This resulted in a cooperation between two branches of industry that brings both ecological and economic benefits.

In its research activities, the university endeavors to maintain and expand worldwide contact with the scientific community. This is also reinforced by the two competence centers, Materials Center Leoben and Polymer Competence Center Leoben , located at the Montanuni Leoben , in which it is involved.

In September 2017 it was announced that a study center would be built between 2019 and 2021 for around 31 million euros. Among other things, three large lecture halls for 450, 300 and 200 listeners, as well as learning and project zones, are to be built on an area of ​​10,000 m².

On September 19, 2019, a stumbling block for the former Jewish student David Spiess was laid in front of the main building, Franz-Josef-Straße 18.

Studies

Campus life in Leoben

Many of the courses offered in Austria can only be taken in Leoben. The Applied Geosciences course of study is also available under different names in Graz ( NAWI Graz ), Boku Vienna , University of Innsbruck and University of Salzburg . Materials science , as materials science, is now only taught as a master's degree at the Vienna University of Technology . Another exception is the plastics technology course , which has also been offered at the University of Linz since the 2009/10 winter semester .

The first year of study, in which the basics of science and technology are taught, is the same for everyone - as the introductory and orientation phase (STEOP) , so that you can easily change your field of study at the end of the first year. This common phase distinguishes the study in Leoben from that at other universities. The courses are generally divided into three sections and have been converted to the Bachelor-Master system since the 2011/12 winter semester :

  1. In the first part of the course (4 semesters) the basic subjects are deepened.
  2. The second section (3 semesters) applies to the basic training in the respective field of study and offers the Bachelor (BSc) with 210 ECTS points after the 7th semester . This does not correspond to Section 54 (3) of the UG 2002 , according to which the Bachelor's degree lasts 6 semesters (or 180 CP) and is an exception in Austria.
  3. In the third section, the master’s degree, the scientific in-depth study is carried out with the final completion of the diploma thesis (MSc or Dipl.-Ing. Or DI with 90 or 120 ECTS, i.e. 3 or 4 semesters standard course duration ).

This is followed by a doctoral degree (180 ECTS, 6 semesters), which, regardless of the field of study, leads to the academic degree Doctor rerum montanarum , abbreviated as Dr. mont., concludes.

  • In the renowned " Times Higher Education " ranking for 2019, the Montanuniversität Leoben is in the 601–800 group worldwide.   • Rektor-Platzer-Ring: On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Montan University Leoben (then “Montanistische Hochschule”) in 1965, a gold ring of honor, called the Rektor-Platzer Ring , was donated for the first time . Since then, this ring of honor has been given to those graduate engineers who have completed their studies (Bachelor and Master’s degree) with excellent performance.
