Georg Behrens-Ramberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Behrens-Ramberg (born November 17, 1875 in Hasenburg near Lüneburg , † September 7, 1955 in Lübeck ) was a German painter and etcher.

life and work

Georg Behrens, who later called himself Behrens-Ramberg - as a descendant of Johann Heinrich Ramberg - was, according to the records in the register book of the Düsseldorf Academy, a student in elementary class with Heinrich Lauenstein in 1893 and 1894 and then (1894) in preparatory class A with Johann Peter Theodor Janssen and his assistant teacher Arthur Kampf and from 1896 to 1897 a member of the artists' association “Malkasten” . He then worked in Berlin. As an early member of the German Association of Artists , his name can already be found in the directory of members of the German Association of Artists from 1906. In 1912 he settled in Lübeck. In the debates of the 1920s, he was considered a conservative painter and spirit . As chairman of the Lübeck Artists' Association from 1927, in contrast to his predecessor Erich Dummer, he took a deeply conservative position that made him the opponent of the then museum director Carl Georg Heise .

He was mainly active as a portrait painter. His portrait of Lübeck's Nazi mayor Otto-Heinrich Drechsler was exhibited at the Great German Art Exhibition in 1942 . A portfolio with his etchings from Lüneburg was self-published.

His last work (1955) was the self-portrait From Atelier to Atelier 3 , which appeared with its obituary on September 8, 1955 in the Lübecker Nachrichten .
