Georg Carl Hahn (born December 23, 1822 in Ludwigslust ; † May 16, 1895 in Lübeck ) was a pioneer in the field of food preservation .

Life

Georg Carl Hahn was born as the elder son of the lawyer and " senior auditor" Georg Ludwig Hahn and his wife, Henriette Charlotte Elisabeth Willich. His younger brother, Theodor Hahn , later became known as a pharmacist, naturopath and specialist book author.

Inspired by a lecture in which Johann Heinrich Gaedertz had spoken in 1844 about the possibilities of preserving food, Hahn, at that time still employed by a Lübeck ironmonger, began his own experiments in this area.

In 1845 he was the first German to succeed in preserving and canning vegetables using the Appert process ; until then, food preserved in tin cans had to be imported from France . Encouraged by his success, Hahn founded his own company for the production of canned food on May 1, 1848 , the still existing company GC Hahn & Co. with its headquarters at Glockengießerstrasse No. 271 (according to today's counting No. 37). It was the first canning factory in Germany to be registered under commercial law .

In 1852 Hahn married Pauline Voigt (* 1832; † 1900). Supported by his wife, who actively participated in the further development of production and the improvement of the preservation processes, Hahn expanded the successful company in the following years. In 1854 the company moved into a larger building at Hüxstrasse No. 359 (today No. 88), and in 1888 Hahn moved the company headquarters to the late-baroque palace at Aegidienstrasse 22 , where it is still located today. The building there stands on the site of a medieval courtyard that belonged to the Italian banker Gherardo Bueri from 1420 to 1455 , who represented the Medici banking house in Lübeck . The courtyard was also known as the Geverdeshof in the 16th to 18th centuries and was rebuilt in 1779 as an eleven-axis residential building by LH von Höveln .

On May 1, 1889 , Georg Carl Hahn handed over management of the company to his sons Georg Theodor Hahn and Julius Hahn ; he died six years later. His company went to British food manufacturer Tate & Lyle in 2007 .
