Löhneysen received his education in Würzburg and Coburg . At the age of 16 he fought in the Second Huguenot War and entered the service of Elector Georg Friedrich von Brandenburg-Ansbach.

In 1575, Elector August brought him to his court in Dresden as a teacher of riding and fencing. In 1583 Löhneysen accepted the call of Duke Julius of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, who appointed him to Gröningen as stable master . During this time Löhneysen acquired the Remlingen estate, in which he set up a printing company with its own typesetting in 1596 , which was followed by another in Zellerfeld . In 1599 Remlingen was raised to a manor.

On his trips together with Elector August Löhneysen had acquired a good knowledge of mining in the Saxon Ore Mountains . Duke Heinrich Julius therefore entrusted him with the management of the Upper Harz mining and metallurgical industry and appointed him mining captain in 1589. After he had performed his office from Wolfenbüttel and Remlingen, Duke Friedrich Ulrich ordered him in 1613 to the Zellerfeld office building built in 1606 for this purpose. In 1619 Löhneysen fell out with the duke, who resigned him.

Löhneysen lived on Remlingen until his death and dedicated himself to the publication of the Aulico Politica , which he did not live to see. The book was completed in 1624 by his sons Heinrich Julius and Wolf Ernst.

In the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War in 1625, not only the printing works in Zellerfeld and Remlingen were destroyed. Until 1627, the places were pillaged by various armies. The book copies still in stock got lost.

Through his daughter Ursula, von Löhneysen is an ancestor of the Imperial Chancellor Prince Otto von Bismarck .

Works (selection)

Characteristic of Löhneysen's works is their rarity, luxurious furnishings and a large number of artistic copperplate engravings and woodcuts. His best-known work, the report from the mine , was proven to be plagiarism at the beginning of the 20th century . Löhneysen took large parts of the text literally from Lazarus Ercker's description of the most splendid mineral ore types and various writings by Georgius Agricola .
