Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer

Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer (born April 18, 1782 in Hanover , † March 19, 1856 in Göttingen ) was a German botanist and professor of forest science at the University of Göttingen . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " G.Mey. "

Life

Meyer studied from 1802 to 1803 in Göttingen and from 1805 in Dillingen natural sciences and forest science. In 1806 he became a mining and forestry office auditor in Hanover and in 1808 a forest inspector in Paderborn . In 1813 he became a Prussian government councilor and temporarily director of the forests in Paderborn, Corvey and Höxter. In 1814 he continued his studies in Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1818. In 1820 he became physiographer of the Kingdom of Hanover and in 1832 court counselor and full professor of forest sciences in Göttingen. The chair was not filled again after his death.

In 1820 he solved a prize task of the Göttingen Society of Sciences on flood damage to the innermost and measures to prevent it.

In 1836 he wrote a flora of Lower Saxony (Chloris hanoverana).

In 1820 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1843 he became a member of the Society of Sciences in Göttingen .

Honors

The plant genus Meyeria DC. from the sunflower family (Asteraceae) is named after Carl Anton von Meyer , Johann Carl Friedrich Meyer , Friedrich Albrecht Anton Meyer , Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer and Ernst Heinrich Friedrich Meyer .
