Georg Hörtnagel

Georg Hörtnagel (born March 12, 1927 in Munich ; † May 1, 2020 ) was a German double bass player and concert agent .

Life

Georg Hörtnagel's father was a farmer. After studying double bass, conducting and composition at the Augsburg Conservatory and the Munich University of Music , Hörtnagel was appointed to the orchestra of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich by Sir Georg Solti in 1948 . Since 1966 he has concentrated on solo and chamber music performances, and has also conducted symphony concerts and operas. He made a name for himself with his recording of the double bass concerto by Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf and also with numerous performances of the “ Trout Quintet ” by Franz Schubert , together with Christoph Eschenbach and the Beaux Arts Trio . He has also conducted numerous symphony concerts and operas. Georg Hörtnagel taught at the Nuremberg Conservatory for many years . In 1967 a hand injury forced him to give up his career as a music interpreter.

Since 1966 he and his wife, Elisabeth Hörtnagel, have been running the “Agency Hörtnagel” she founded in Munich. However, his wife died in 1980 at the age of 39 along with his then 12-year-old son. During this difficult time Georg Hörtnagel met his future second wife Angelika; The two married in 1997. He has been running the concert agency since 2015 together with his daughter Konstanze and two other partners. As a concert agent, Hörtnagel organized the German-Russian music exchange for many years.

Awards

  • The municipality of Polling (near Weilheim) made Hörtnagel an honorary citizen at the beginning of 2018.
  • Hörtnagel received a Live Entertainment Award for his life's work in 2018 .
  • As a visible sign of appreciation for his services to musical life in Bavaria and beyond, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1998 by the Bavarian Minister for Education and Culture .
