Georg Holmsten
Georg Holmsten (born August 4, 1913 in Riga , † July 21, 2010 in Berlin ) was a German writer and historian .
Life
Georg Holmsten first grew up in the Baltic States . In 1922 the family moved to Berlin , where he graduated from high school in 1933 and then studied literature and history at what was then Friedrich Wilhelms University . In 1935 he broke off his studies because of his opposition to the Nazi regime and became a freelance journalist , first with the US news agency United Press , from 1939 as editor and head of the foreign editorial department of the German news office .
On July 1, 1942, he was drafted into the Wehrmacht . Since February 1943, he served as an intelligence officer in the Office Group abroad in the Ausland / Abwehr under Admiral Canaris . In this capacity he also played a role in the July 20, 1944 conspiracy . In the event of a successful coup d'état, he was appointed head of the German news office.
After the war, Holmsten became a freelance author and journalist and published around thirty books. He lived in Berlin and was married to the poet Aldona Gustas .

Georg Holmsten has come out with both fiction and scientific publications. He wrote historical novels as well as historical monographs. He also gained fame through several biographies written for the series rororo . He wrote the texts for six of the Baedeker volumes that appeared in 1967 and were dedicated to the West Berlin districts. His focus as a novelist is on personalities of the ancien régime , as a historian on the 18th century and on Germany in the Second World War .
Office and dignity
Holmsten was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, in 1981. He was a member of the Association of German writers (VS) in ver.di .
