Georg Janny (born May 20, 1864 Vienna ; † February 21, 1935 in Vienna) was an Austrian painter of sets , landscapes and figures.

Life

Georg Janny worked as a theater decoration painter in the then well-known studio of the painters Carlo Brioschi , Hermann Burghart and Johann Kautsky , in which Konrad Petrides , Leopold Rothaug , Ferdinand Brunner and Alfons Mucha , among others, also worked. Georg Janny was a member of the Dürerbund and temporarily its archivist.

Along with Karl Schuller he painted in 1898 the main curtain (from 1989 to the Iron Curtain converted) for the Volksoper (originally imperial jubilee Municipal Theater) in Vienna for the 50th jubilee of Franz Joseph I. At the opera " The Queen of Sheba " by Karl Goldmark designed he designed the set around 1906. Images from the 2nd and 3rd act have survived. “The Queen of Sheba” was one of the most successful operas of the late 19th century and was performed at the Vienna State Opera during this time .

Georg Janny also worked as a landscape and figure painter until his death. In addition to numerous landscapes, Janny often painted scenarios of fairy tales or magical worlds, the symbolic content of which is reminiscent of pictures by Arnold Böcklin or Gustave Doré .

Georg Janny's estate is now in the Hernals District Museum in Vienna.
