Georg Josef Bernhard Schäfer (born August 20, 1855 in Karlstadt , † November 26, 1912 in Munich ) was a German painter .

Life

Schäfer was born in Karlstadt am Main in 1855 as the son of an economist. He started drawing at an early age and decided to become a painter before finishing elementary school . In 1871 he moved to Munich and attended the Königliche Kunstgewerbeschule . Two years later he moved to the Polytechnic School , where he passed a state examination in drawing and modeling.

In 1875 he was accepted into the class of antiquities at the Royal Art Academy in Munich and studied Christian art with Andreas Müller . A year later he started teaching at the Royal Building School and was appointed professor in 1906 .

Schäfer worked primarily as a history and church painter . One of his best-known works is the overpainting of three baroque ceiling paintings of the Church of St. Kilian in Bad Heilbrunn in 1882. He also designed frescoes and altarpieces in Zagreb , Bad Brückenau , Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld , Neustadt , Weilbach , Aurach and Pullach . He also worked as a genre and portrait painter.
