Georg Müller (born October 13, 1917 in Budaörs , † December 23, 2004 in Leipzig ) was a German agricultural scientist .

biography

The son of a bricklayer studied agriculture at the University of Budapest from 1938 and was then a plant protection inspector in Hungary until 1947. After moving to the Soviet Zone, he became a member of the SED in 1947 . First he worked as a registration inspector and then as a department head in the Grossenhain district administration . In 1950 he became department head at the Institute for Arable and Crop Production in Müncheberg near Berlin.

He received his doctorate in soil science in 1953 from the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis on the possibility of increasing the yield of potatoes by spreading the starch content within the variety . He then qualified as a professor in 1956 for soil science at the Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis entitled Investigations into the interactions between soil organisms in 24 species of forage plants .

In 1958 he started teaching in Leipzig. In 1961 he was appointed professor for soil science and microbiology at the University of Leipzig . This made him director of the Institute for Soil Science and Microbiology at the University of Leipzig. As such, he was rector of the Leipzig Alma Mater from 1964 to 1968 . From 1964 to 1969 he was also a member of the SED district leadership.

Since the institute was moved to Halle (Saale) in 1968 , he took over the same professorship there at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and retired in 1982.

Müller's most important publication during his activity in Leipzig was the publication of his book on soil biology , published in 1965 . This met with great international resonance in almost all European countries as well as in the USA because it had closed an existing gap that treated soil bacteriology, mycology and zoology as a unit, also with the aim of increasing the yield of the soil.
