Georg Otto von Bonin

Georg Otto von Bonin (born August 10, 1613 , probably in Pomerania , † August 19, 1670 in Rügenwalde in Western Pomerania ) was a Prussian statesman and German poet .

Bonin was a descendant of the noble Bonin family, which can be traced back to the 13th century in Western Pomerania . His parents were Anton von Bonin , Episcopal-Camminscher Stifts-Voigt and regimental counselor Duke Bogislaws XIV. , Dean of Kolberg and governor of Bublitz, and Elisabeth von Wedell from Freienwalde .

Bonin had studied at the University of Leiden . A lecture he gave there was published in Leiden under the title De causis afflictae Europae . He then worked as a privy councilor to the Pomeranian Duke Ernst Bogislaw von Croy and worked as an envoy of the Camminer Stift in 1648 in the preliminary negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia .

After the Camminer Stift came to Brandenburg through the Peace of Westphalia , he entered the service of Elector Friedrich Wilhelm of Brandenburg . He was then used several times as a diplomatic envoy, including in The Hague , Warsaw and at the imperial court in Vienna .

After he was appointed Privy Councilor by the Elector in 1655, he was promoted to Real Privy Councilor on April 5, 1658 with an annual salary of 500 thalers . Bonin had also been dean of the cathedral at Cammin and governor of Bublitz . As a personality with an excellent general education and extraordinary intellectual abilities, he was commissioned by the Elector in 1666 to examine the feasibility of a 'universal university' in Brandenburg, as envisioned by the Swedish Councilor Johan Skytte .

Bonin had also emerged as a poet of hymns, which were included in popular hymn books.

In addition to Rügenwalde, Bublitz is also given in the literature as the place of his death. Presumably he died in Rügenwalde in the height of summer 1670 and was then buried in Bublitz.
