Georg Radziwill (Polish Jerzy Radziwiłł , born May 31, 1556 in Vilnius , Lithuania ; † January 21, 1600 in Rome ; German Georg Radziwill , Lithuanian also Jurgis Radvila ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Radziwiłł's parents were Mikołaj Radziwiłł "the black" and Elżbieta Szydłowiecka. He studied in Leipzig and Rome.

On December 17, 1574 he was appointed coadjutor bishop of the Archdiocese of Willna and succeeded Walerian Protasewicz as Bishop of Willna on December 31, 1579 , who died on the same day; he became governor ( namiestnik ) of Livonia . On April 10, 1583, he received the sacrament of ordination from Bishop Cyprian Wilinski, OP the auxiliary bishop in Vilnius .

On December 12, 1583, Pope Gregory XIII appointed him . to the College of Cardinals . Georg Radziwill was consecrated bishop on January 6, 1573 by Cardinal Alberto Bolognetti Apostolic Nuncio in Poland, co- consecrators were Melchior Giedroyc the Bishop of Žemaitija (Samogizia o Tels; Zmudz) ( Lithuania ) and Bishop Cyprian Wilinski, who already ordained him a priest. The solemn installation of the cardinal priest in his titular church San Sisto in Rome took place on July 14, 1586. On August 9, 1591, he was appointed Bishop of Krakow and on May 25, 1592, he was introduced to the Wawel Cathedral of his diocese.

In 1592 Radziwiłł was adviser to King Sigismund III. Wasa of Poland .

After his death, Cardinal Radziwiłł was buried under the Szafraniec Chapel of the Wawel Cathedral in Kraków .
